Meet Uncle Hussein won 23rd Anugerah Juara Lagu!

"Illuminasi Muzik", or "Illumination of Music" was this year's theme for the 23rd Anugerah Juara Lagu, Malaysia's prestigious music award show. Equivalent to America's Grammy Awards, this year's Juara Lagu brings forth rather interesting shake ups in the music industry.

A plus point for TV3 this year is that they decide to show a live stream on their website. Yeay! Here's some hightlights of the night:

  • Being the "only" representative from the growing "indie" scene, Meet Uncle Hussein decides to performed as "Harvey Dent & the Beach Boys". Sporting the regular M.U.H showmanship on stage, this band has definitely paved away the path for "indie" greatness crossing over to mainstream music.
  • Faizal Tahir's performance for "Sampai Syurga" was rather good. After unable to perform for last year's Anugerah Juara Lagu due this Superman incident, I think he has the chance to win. Will he win?
  • The performance with the 3 kids singing on stage was really cute. The little girl has a lot of potential. Huge potential. She can sing like Jaclyn.
  • Stacy is hot!
  • Faizal Tahir won Best Vocal for "Sampai Syurga". Strike one!
  • Faizal Tahir won Best Ballad for "Sampai Syurga". Strike two!
  • Meet Uncle Hussein won Best Pop Rock for "Laguku Untukmu". Indie gold!

Now, the winner for the 23rd Anugerah Juara Lagu is Meet Uncle Hussein! May the gods of music favour their career. But honestly, Faizal Tahir should have won. But hey, it's all about the mainstream support right?

All in all, this is the 2nd year an independent (without major label ties) rock band won Malaysia's Grammy award. Last year would be Estranged with their exceptional hit, "Itu Kamu". This is an achievement for rock music, more importantly, an achievement for all independent musicians. You can do it!

I'm banking on One Buck Short to rise to the occasion for the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu. Will they make it?

Faizal Tahir should have won? it's all about the mainstream support? what the heck is that supposed to mean? baffling.... Lagu Untukmu is just pure genius. if you bothered to really listen to its arrangement, three years in the making really shows here. Faizal's song was OK, but really, nothing new or revolutionary there.

and err... you acknowledge Estranged as an indie band last year. Are they not an indie band anymore this year just because their album's distributed by Sony now? (since you described MUH as being the only indie rep last night, even though Estranged was competing, too). i would think the definition of an indie band goes beyond just who distributes their album.

not trying to be mean, here, but uh.. you don't sound very indie(?). kudos on supporting the indie scene, nonetheless, i guess.

you got me there bro! and you are not being mean, in fact i kinda like being wrong sometimes :)

hmmm... faizal tahir performed well that night. my observations was purely based on his performance that night. i didn't really take note of how the song was composed & made, and his songs was "backed" up pretty good by interesting people. i acknowledge taja's genius in making "laguku untukmu" from where it was to where it is now. i didn't mean to underestimate their talent & showmanship.

the thing about indie, is that it's really hard to get the "right" definition of what it really means. let's put it this way, i'd like to define indie, which is by no means, the true definition, is whether you. musician or artist, is capable of not associating themselves with the big 4. ignoring the big 4 is considered suicide, but ignoring you're own capabilities going beyond them is suicidal as well.

but you were right. estranged is still considered, "indie". my bad.

you made me realise one thing reza, i maybe wrong in my definition. but 1 thing i do know, defining what "indie" is, is like trying to guess which comes out first, the chicken or the egg?

thanks for the comments reza. keep 'em coming!
